Writing Through the Hard Seasons: When Your Story Is Still Being Written

Some of the most powerful Christian books were written in the middle of the storm, not after it passed. Here's how to write faithfully when you're still in the wilderness.

I wrote my first book in the hardest year of my life.

My marriage was in crisis. My health was failing. My faith was being tested in ways I had never anticipated. And every morning, I sat down at my desk and wrote.

Not because I had it all figured out. Not because I was on the other side. But because the act of writing — of putting words to the experience of walking with God through suffering — was itself an act of faith.

The gift of the unresolved story

We often think we need to wait until we have the ending before we can tell the story. Until we're healed. Until we're restored. Until we can look back and say "and here's what God did."

But some of the most powerful writing comes from the middle of the story. From the place of not knowing. From the honest, trembling declaration: "I don't understand what God is doing, but I trust Him."

That is not weakness. That is faith. And readers — especially readers who are in their own hard seasons — recognize it immediately.

A word of caution

Writing from the middle of a hard season requires wisdom and discernment. Not everything that is happening to you needs to be published. Some things are for your journal, your therapist, your trusted community.

Ask God: Is this story mine to tell? Is this the right time? Is this for others, or is it still for me?

When the answer is yes — write with everything you have.
